The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) is hosting its annual 5K Rural Run/Walk in September, a virtual fundraiser that supports programs benefiting rural communities across the United States. NCSC is an Elite sponsor of this year’s event.
Now in its sixth year, the FRS Rural Run/Walk invites participants to complete a 5K (3.1 miles) at their own pace and in a location of their choice during the month of September. Registration is open and those who sign up by August 1 will receive a T-shirt before the event begins.
The Run/Walk is still a way for people all across the country to do something together that supports their rural community. It’s healthy, it’s fun and it supports FRS programs!

“NCSC’s support as an Elite sponsor helps us expand the reach and impact of this event,” FRS Executive Director Pam Becker said. “FRS started the Rural Run/Walk during the COVID pandemic as a way for people to do something outdoors while still feeling connected to FRS and their community. The Run/Walk is still a way for people all across the country to do something together that supports their rural community. It’s healthy, it’s fun and it supports FRS programs!”
Proceeds from the event fund scholarships for high school seniors and grants for schools, libraries, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations in rural areas.
Employees of NTCA member companies are encouraged to participate, and those enrolled in GHP Wellness Connections may count the event toward their annual activity requirement. Participants can register individually or as part of a group, and companies may sponsor employee registrations. Groups of 10 or more are eligible for a promotional code and consolidated T-shirt shipping.
“So many NTCA member companies are already incredibly charitable within their community, but FRS programs like scholarships and grants are a way to amplify that generosity and make an even bigger and wider impact in their service areas,” Becker said.
This year’s event introduces four new competitive awards:
Participants can choose to run, walk, jog or even bike the race and are encouraged to track their distance using fitness apps, include friends and pets, and share photos on social media using @FRSRuralConnect or by emailing foundation@frs.org.
